About Chiropractic: What makes it different?
What is it about Chiropractic that makes it so different?
The direct translation of chiropractic means “done by hand”. Primarily the goal of chiropractic care is to optimise one’s health with adjustments that stimulate and optimise nervous system and musculoskeletal function. Because of the intimate connection between the spinal column, spinal cord and nerves, biomechanical dysfunction between the vertebra of the spine can have far reaching effects. Our work as chiropractors is performed without the use of drugs and surgery. What makes us so different is that our focus and goal is not to actually treat the injury or disease. Our attention is on maximising the function of the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. It just so happens that in many cases as the body begins to function better other problems may in some cases (not all) begin to resolve as well.
Today chiropractic services have evolved to be a multifaceted healthcare approach, extending well beyond adjustments to include soft tissue releases, exercise and rehabilitation along with lifestyle related strategies for general wellness and longevity.
So what is an adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment is a procedure performed to help bring a joint move better and bring it into better alignment. Chiropractors adjust joints by placing their hands or a device onto the joint and applying a varying degree of force. Through the movement this force creates there is subsequent activation of joint receptors and therefore the nervous system. It is this awakening of the nervous system that facilitates better joint alignment and posture, the reduction of pain, increase range of motion / flexibility and decrease in muscular spasm. Sometimes a sound like ‘pop’, ‘click’, ‘crack’ can be heard when an adjustment is performed. This is simply nitrogen gas leaving the joint space and it is normal and natural process.
What makes chiropractic so exciting is that it is not just for the sick and injured. It is for people of all ages looking to take a pro-active approach to their health and get the most out of life. Many of our clients come in whilst they are feeling great wanting to stay that way.
