Easy Steps to Fend Off a Headache

headachesHead throbbing? Trouble concentrating? Pain preventing you from doing your work? Before you crawl into a dark room and hide away to deal with your headache, try these steps. These ideas could get you out of trouble and back enjoying the day.

Phase 1 headache intervention: Put your tablet or phone down.

Hunching over a phone or tablet even for short periods of time can lead to a build-up of pressure in the muscles, joints and spinal nerves. Over the longer term in can put your joints out of alignment and result in spinal degeneration. Recent studies have found that a whopping 84% of young adults experienced pain in the neck and back last year as a result of being slouched over a phone or tablet. If that doesn’t work. . .

Phase 2 headache reduction: Tennis ball massage.

Find a couple of tennis balls, ideally ones that haven’t been chewed and slobbered over by your dogs. Lay down on the floor facing the ceiling. Place the tennis balls just under the base of your skull at the back of your neck. Press your head into the tennis balls and hold for 3-5 seconds. Move up and down the neck focusing on the sore spots. Repeat several times. If that doesn’t work. . .

Phase 3 headache reduction: Stretch and move.

Movement is sometimes the best medicine. Go for a 5-10 minute walk. Roll your shoulders forward and backward 10 times each. Then shoulder shrug 10 times holding for 2-3 seconds at the top. Drop your chin to your chest, then look at the sky for 10 reps. Then look over each of your shoulders for 10 reps. Finally, drop your ear down to your shoulder, repeating either side for 10 reps. If that doesn’t work. . .

Phase 4 headache reduction: Get your spine checked by a chiropractor

If you are experiencing headaches on a frequent basis a spinal misalignment could be the underlying cause. While there are a multitude of causes for spinal mis-alignment (poor posture being only one) a chiropractic assessment is the best place to start.

In many cases the detection and correction of spinal mis-alignment will address the underlying cause of your headache and give you the long lasting relief that you need.
